We regret to announce the passing of Dr. Richard Dean Erbes of Estherville, Iowa on June 9, 2023 at the age of 71. Rick passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.
Rick was born to Dean and Ruth (Hanson) Erbes on December 29, 1951. After graduating from South Hamilton High School in 1970, he continued his studies at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa and the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago. After moving to Estherville in 1978, he became a dedicated podiatrist and was beloved by his patients over his 40 years of practice.
In 1980, Rick married Louise Beard with whom he had two daughters, Sarah and Carrie. In 1997, Rick married Leane Weissenburger and gained three step-sons, Taylor, Trevor, and Tucker. Beyond his own children, he would come to be known as a second father to many of their friends. Later in life, his grandchildren loved spending time with Grandpa, sharing his candies and running from “The Claw”. Rick valued family above all else.
A lifelong music lover, Rick cherished every opportunity to share his passion for singing. He found great joy performing in the Gloryland Quartet, Many Voices Choir, and local musical productions. Whether the Dodgers, Hawkeyes, or Bears, Rick loved cheering on his favorite teams and attending a game when he could. He enjoyed simple pleasures in life: good food, good Scotch, and good company.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 25 years, Leane; 5 children, Sarah Erbes, Carrie Plaine (Andrew), Taylor Olson, Trevor Olson (Brit), and Tucker Olson; 3 sisters, Donna Murphy (Bob), Sandy Barkema (Steve Hetland), and Linda Hunter (Kevin Van Otterloo); and 11 grandchildren, Caden, Oliver, Madden, Brooks, Thor, Alana, TJ, Brody, Cooper, Jaxon, and Reid. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dean and Ruth.
Rick will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, stellar grandfather, and stable force in so many of our lives. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Avera@Home Hospice Care in Rick’s memory.
