Mass of Christian Burial for Helen Myers, 93, of Emmetsburg, was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg with Father Paul Kelly, celebrant. Interment was at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg. Having lived a life well lived, Helen passed away on June 26, 2024, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.
Helen A. Myers, daughter of Myrl Samuel and Mary Noretta (Jorgenson) Beaver was born on August 24, 1930, in Emmet County, Iowa.
As a child, Helen moved with her family several times, settling back in Ruthven, before her graduation in May of 1948. On September 13, 1948, she was united in marriage to James (Jim) Myers at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Helen and Jim were blessed with eleven children. They lived and farmed east of Graettinger until 1981, when they built a home on the family farm southeast of Emmetsburg. In 1994, they retired from farming and moved to Emmetsburg. Helen and Jim were together for 58 years before Jim passed away on October 20, 2006. Helen continued to live in her home until moving into Emerald Oaks Apartments in 2019; in 2023 she moved into Emmetsburg Care Center.
Helen was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Graettinger, until they moved to Emmetsburg and joined Holy Family Catholic Church. She was a lector and was known for her donations of food and pies for many church events. Helen was also active and held various offices in the VFW Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters of America, Red Hat Society, and the Hospital Auxiliary.
Helen enjoyed taking care of her family, participating in neighborhood events, crossword puzzles, camping, and going on bus sightseeing trips. Spending time with family and friends, especially afternoon coffee at Kirby’s, was important to Helen.
Helen is survived by her children Mike Myers of Falcon Heights, MN, Kathy Witzke of Newell, IA, Pat (Steve) Block of Yankton, SD, John (Connie) Myers of Jackson, MN, Judy (Melvin) Janssen of Emmetsburg, IA, Dan (Sandy) Myers of Algona, IA, Gary (Kami Dyer) Myers of Estherville, IA, Richard (Yara DeGues) Myers of Balsas, Brazil, SA, Connie (Paul) Chapman of Milford, IA, Karen (Dave) Marcotte of Estherville, IA, and Paul (Tracey Henderson) Myers of Emmetsburg, IA; 26 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 7 step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother George Beaver of Baldwin, WI and sister Nancy Jevyak of Norwalk, CA; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughters-in-law Marsha Myers and Kendra Myers; son-in-law Bob Witzke; brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard Beaver, Don (Nonda) Beaver, Dale (Carrie) Beaver, and infant brother Robert Beaver; sister and brother-in-law, Mary (Marvin) Shackelford; brother-in-law Bud Jevyak; sister-in-law Gloria Beaver; nephew Randy Beaver; great-granddaughter Brynn Arnold; and many extended family members.
