Mass of Christian Burial for David E. Hansen, 80, of Estherville, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 17, 2023, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville with Father Paul Kelly, celebrant. Interment will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Estherville. He passed away peacefully on Nov. 9, 2023.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 16, 2023, at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel. A rosary will be said in honor of David at 4:30 p.m. prior to the visitation on Thursday at the funeral home.
David Eugene Hansen was born March 11, 1943, to Hans John Hansen and Marie Agnes (Irmiter) Hansen, in Estherville, Iowa.
David grew up on a farm in Ringsted, and after graduating from Ringsted High School in 1961, he eventually settled down in Estherville, where he lived out the rest of his life.
His attention to routine and detail was ever present in no matter what the endeavor, whether it was laboring for local farmers, or working various jobs in the Ringsted, Armstrong, and Estherville area.
His dedication as a faithful follower of the teachings of Jesus Christ was reflected in his work as a parishioner at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church by opening up the church every day and passing out bulletins, being an usher, and collecting money. He was a proud Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.
Being an intentional Christian led him to be named Ten Years, Plus, Adult Volunteer of the Year, by the Iowa Health Care Association in 1998. He also enjoyed working with the youth, whether it was as coach for the Ringsted Little League Program, or participating in the Big Brother Program.
David loved all things sports and especially his beloved Minnesota Twins and Vikings. His love for sports carried over in to his greatest passion, which was as a basketball referee and a baseball umpire. In 2015 he was honored with a 50 -year plaque by the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Just as in the bible, he knew the rule book inside and out.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister-in-law Rhoda.
Left to cherish memories of David are his siblings, Douglas, Dubuque, IA., Rebecca Luft (Gary), Granger IN, Greg, Maryville, MO, James (Julie), Sioux Falls, SD Angela Johnson (Gregg), Cape Coral, FL., Kevin (Vicky), Indianola, IA., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Our devoted brother finally achieved his dream of being called up to the Big League. God’s call. Safe at home, in Heaven. Memorial contributions may be given to the Knights of Columbus.
