Funeral services for Daryl Burns, 92, of Estherville, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 15, 2022, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville with Father Paul Kelly officiating. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery, Estherville with military rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91. He died on Dec. 10, 2022, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2022, at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville.

Daryl Gilbert Burns, the son of Edwin “Ted” and Ethel (Mace) Burns, was born on May 21, 1930, in Estherville, Iowa.

Daryl attended Estherville High School, before enlisting in the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge, Daryl returned home and was employed at Roy’s Southside Service in Estherville. Later, he owned and operated Daryl’s Skelly Service in Estherville.

He was united in marriage to Barbara Wee on August 1, 1970, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville. After their son Jeffrey was born, the family moved to Globe, Ariz., where they owned and operated a motel for 11 years. After selling the motel, they returned to Estherville, where he retired.

He had a passion for racing stock cars and raced at area tracks. He was one of the pioneers of the Jackson Speedway and drove the No. 2 “Deuce”. He won many races and was awarded multiple trophies throughout his career. In 1956 and 1957, he was the track champion in Jackson. He was inducted into the Jackson Speedway Hall of Fame in 2002.

In other leisure time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting with his nephew, Garrett, and reading.

Daryl is survived by his wife, Barbara, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey, January 2, 1994, parents, brothers, Alvia Coleman and Fredrick South, sisters, Florence Tigges, Mildred Christensen, June Lowenberg, and Lucille Lyon.
