Trojans eke out two-point win over Lakers


Trailing by two, Iowa Lakes’ Caleb Johnson had a look at the basket, but his 3-point attempt was off the mark as NIACC held on for a two-point victory, 83-81, over the 14th-ranked Lakers last Wednesday.
Iowa Lakes did not take care of the ball in the first half and the Lakers committed 14 turnovers and trailed 49-31 at halftime.
Iowa Lakes got within a basket several times in the second half, but couldn’t complete the rally.
The Lakers trailed by one, 81-80, after a shot by Xzavier Jones. NIACC then made two free throws to the Lakers’ one before Johnson’s attempted game-winner.
Both teams shot over 50 percent from the field. NIACC shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) including 8-of-16 from 3-point range. Iowa Lakes shot 55 percent (32-of-58) from the field, but just 4-of-13 from 3-point range. NIACC also had an advantage at the free throw line where the Trojans were 17-of-26 while the Lakers were 13-of-22.
Ryan Hall led Iowa Lakes with 18 points while Jones had 17 points and nine rebounds. Joseph Owens chipped in 15 points. Johnson had nine of the team’s 19 assists.
NIACC was led by Myles Tucker with 18 points.
Iowa Lakes (11-5 overall, 3-2 in the conference) had last Saturday’s game against Southeast Community College postponed. The Lakers were on the road against Northeast Community College on Tuesday. Iowa Lakes is on the road today against Iowa Western. The Lakers then take on Dakota County Technical College on Saturday, host Iowa Western on Monday and host Ellsworth next Wednesday.
