Visitation was Monday at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Graettinger.

Known as Uncle Naughty by his great nephews because to them, Monte sounded like the word naughty, but the name fit his fun-loving nature. Monte leaves a legacy of joy to those who knew him. He thrived on helping others and always lent a hand to friends, neighbors, the elderly, and anyone needing assistance. He had a big smile, large belly laugh, a heart of gold, and a great conversation, especially about his boys, of whom he was beyond proud of.

Born on February 23, 1964, Monte spent his childhood in Graettinger, IA, and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1982, and lived in Storm Lake, Colorado, and California before returning to Graettinger to raise his family. He worked in the construction business for most of his life and later kept busy helping his mother around the horse acreage as well as helping his neighbors and family. Tinkering in the shop was a favorite pastime, and Monte made picture frames/chairs/benches/farm doors/etc from old barn wood and gave to family, friends, and donated them to fundraisers. Monte enjoyed volunteering at the Clay County Fair each year, spending time with his boys and family, and in his younger days he could be found being a volunteer fire fighter, motorcycling, snowmobiling and/or any adventure. A life-long sports enthusiast, Monte enjoyed attending high school, college, and professional sporting events – especially football. He was a huge fan of the Saints, Iowa Hawkeyes, Vikings, and of course, the Graettinger Pirates but was always on board to attend any game. His laughter and kindness will be missed. He was a friend to all he met.

Left to cherish his memory are his sons Austin (Sara) of Omaha NE, Cody of Danville, IA, and Jordan of West Virginia, his mother Barbara Thompson, Graettinger, his sister, Tammy Higgins (Jim), Spencer, his brother, Todd (Rhonda), Cherokee, IA as well as nieces, nephew, aunts and uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his dad Bill, brother Tracy, his grandparents, and aunts and uncles.
