Visitation for Joan C. Heckard, 82, of Estherville, will be held from 3-5 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023, at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Joan passed away on Jan. 6, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.
Joan C. Heckard, the daughter of Edmond A. and Monica M. (Gagnat) Cader was born in Oakland, Calif., on April 30, 1940.
Joan attended Notre Dame Academy in Alameda, Calif. She married John Heckard on February 6, 1960, in Reno, Nevada. The couple moved to Estherville in 1966. Joan worked as a jailer and dispatcher in Emmet County for 25 years, retiring in 2002.
She was a member of Grandview Baptist Church, the Emmet County Rescue Squad, and the Civil Air Patrol.
In her free time, Joan enjoyed sewing, crafts, cooking, fishing, traveling, and camping.
Joan is survived by her husband John Heckard of Estherville, Iowa; her children, Christine Stephan of Newell, Iowa, Gary (Joan) Heckard of Estherville, Iowa, Cheryl (David) Brewer of Cherokee, Iowa, and Greg (Heather) Heckard of Jackson, Minnesota; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Francis Berberich, of Roseville, California, and Jeannette Rebiejo, of Turlock, California; as well as many other extended family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Donald Cader.
