Funeral services for Doris Christensen, 95, of Estherville, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estherville with Pastor Cole McCormick officiating. Interment will be at East Side Memorial Cemetery Estherville. Doris passed away peacefully on the morning of Dec. 26, 2021, at Aspire Nursing and Rehabilitation in Estherville.
Visitation was Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville.
Doris Louise (Natterstad) Christensen, the oldest child of Olie and Alice (Lock) Natterstad was born January 12, 1926, in Estherville, Iowa.
She received her education in Gruver, Iowa, graduating from Gruver High School in 1944. During her high school years, Doris played guard on the girls’ basketball team that went to the state tournament in 1944. She then attended one year at Mankato Business College. When returning home, she worked at Greig & Co. Elevator until her marriage.
On July 31, 1947, she was united in marriage to Norman Christensen. Norman passed away on March 3, 2014, after more than 66 years of marriage. She helped Norman on the farm while raising their girls. Doris was active in her church and neighborhood clubs throughout the years. Norman and Doris lived on the farm until October 2008 when they moved into Estherville. Doris loved to bake and always had something freshly baked for when company stopped by. She and Norman enjoyed playing BINGO and helped with the VFW Bingo for over thirty years. Doris was a huge cat lover. Over the years she had several indoor and many outdoor cats. She never met a cat she didn’t like. When asked recently by her grandson which cat had been her favorite she replied, “I loved them all.”
Doris was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Gruver, where she was baptized, confirmed, and married. She was a current member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Estherville. In her younger years she was also a member of Midway Country Club and VFW Post 3388 Ladies Auxiliary in Estherville.
Left to cherish Doris’ memory are her two daughters, Norma Guge (Mark), and Marj Curry all of Estherville; her 4 grandchildren, Alene Curry (Ron Smith), Chris Curry (Bobbi Jo), Sara Taplin (Bryant), and Erin Guge all of Estherville; six great grandchildren, Riley Curry (Lindsey), Trevor Curry (Haley Moklestad) and Bryelle Curry (Brady Jones), Madison More (Zach Kilgore), Logan More, and Camden McKenney; three great-great grandchildren Lydia and Ames Curry, and Zhavia Jones; brother-in-law Russell Christensen; several nieces and nephews; and two cats Puddin’ and Domino.
Preceding Doris in death were her parents; husband, Norman; son-in-law, Tom Curry; and siblings Lois (Archie) Sunde, John (Martha) Natterstad, and Joyce (Jack) Weaver.
