Mass of Christian Burial for Clifford A. Nicol, 93, of Estherville, was held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Estherville, with Father Paul Kelly officiating. Interment was at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Estherville, with military honors by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91. He passed away Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Good Samaritan Society in Estherville, Iowa.
Visitation was Friday, Oct. 28, 2022, at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville.
Clifford A. Nicol, the son of Elmer and Sadie (Jolliffe) Nicol, was born November 3, 1928, in Pocahontas County, Iowa.
He attended the Emmetsburg schools. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict, obtaining the rank of Corporal and was stationed part of his military career in California. On May 18, 1948, he was united in marriage to Frances Bradley in Emmetsburg.
After being honorably discharged from military service, Frances and Cliff returned to the area in 1952, moving to Estherville to make their home and raise their family. He was employed at Donovan Motors in Estherville where he worked as a bookkeeper and mechanic for 13 1/2 years. Cliff was also employed with the City of Estherville for 24 years where he worked in the Street Department Division as department head until his retirement. In his leisure time Cliff enjoyed fishing, hunting and making fleece blankets for gifts. But his most cherished times were spent with his family and friends. Frances passed away April 4, 2011.
Cliff was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of VFW Post 3388 in Estherville.
Left to cherish Cliff’s memory are his children, Kenneth (Jan) Nicol of Austin, Texas, Virginia (Gary) Eide of Estherville, Patrick (Deniese) Nicol of Estherville, Mary (Barry) Fain of Springville, Iowa; 15 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
He has been preceded in death by his wife; son, Robert; sisters, Evelyn and Margaret and brothers, Eugene and Orville.
