Alfred A. Newman Jr. age 88, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 2, 2024. He graduated from Wausa High School in 1953. He was in the Air Force from 1953-1957, and retired from the Army Reserve in 1988 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan in 1960 and began teaching in Lincoln, NE. He earned two advanced degrees from the University of Nebraska. He taught in the Lincoln Public Schools from 1960-1966. He was the Principal of Gates Elementary in Grand Island from 1966-1975, and the Superintendent of North Loup/Scotia NE Schools from 1975-1980.
He finished his career at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville Iowa as Vice President from 1980-1995. He retired in 1995 and moved with his wife Dorothea to be near their children.
Al is survived by his son, Barry (Deb) Newman of Ashland, NE and daughter Cherilyn (Jerry) Wicks of Springfield, NE. He has six grandchildren, Matt (Taylor) Newman, Kelsey (Adam) Schiltz, Jordan (Lauren) Newman, Ben (Anna) Wicks, Andy (Anne) Wicks, Jacob (Jade) Wicks and eight great grandchildren; sisters Darlyne Ekstrom, Ardis Moseman, Geneva Tipton, Rosalee (Tom) Engler, Beverly (Bob) Newhaus, and many friends, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea Newman, his parents, Alfred A Newman Sr. and mother Edith (Bloomquist) Newman, sister Eunice Moelling, brother Harley Newman, sister-in-law Maryann Newman, brother-in-laws Carl Ekstrom, Merlin Tipton and Wesley Moseman. A special niece, Anita Ekstrom, also predeceased him, as well as his nephew Brent Ekstrom.
