By Amy H. Peterson - Staff Writer , Estherville News

ALGONA The man charged in the shooting death of an Algona woman outside a bank in LuVerne Dec. 4 has changed his plea to guilty. As a result, 35-year-old Valentino Williams of Coralville faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison for first-degree murder. The state dismissed a charge for first-degree robbery in the plea agreement.

Williams shot and killed Jessica Wishaar, 43, of Algona, while robbing Security State Bank, where she worked. When police caught up with Williams, they recovered an empty, black duffel bag and burglary tools from the rented vehicle he was driving.

Court records show Williams has spent time in and out of prison since he was a teenager. Williams was taken to a state correctional institution Friday. He was scheduled to stand trial by jury on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020. Three victim impact statements were entered into the record Friday as well as a victim pecuniary damages statement.
