Funeral services for Effner Opsal, 93, of Armstrong, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Oct. 11, 2019, at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong with Pastor Lauri Boysen officiating. Interment will be at Armstrong Grove Cemetery with military rites by Weiby Johnson VFW Post of Armstrong. He departed this life on October 8, 2019.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Effner Lauris Opsal, the son of Olai and Mildred (Hanson) Opsal was born September 30, 1926, at Halfa, IA and he grew up in Armstrong, IA and attended school in Halfa, graduating from Armstrong High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and participated in the Japanese Occupation.

Effner married Betty Jane Looft on August 15, 1948, at Nazareth Lutheran Church and are life long members there. Effner worked at Looft's Food Market for 12 years and was also an operating partner in L & O Dairy and Locker. Effner was the Armstrong Postmaster for 27 years retiring in 1986. He taught Sunday School, served on the church council, the Town Council, was a Fire Department volunteer, and charter member of the volunteer ambulance crew. He was also active in activities with the Kiwanis, VFW, Heart Fund Drive, and Welfare Board of Emmet County.

He enjoyed golf, motorcycling, bowling, snowmobiling, car and tractor shows, and reading. Gull Lake family vacations and winters in Arizona along with a New Year's Eve Group gathering were favorite yearly events. Effner was proud of his two sons, Steven Lauris and Mark Alan. Effner and Betty have been blessed with many years of good health and a family to be proud of.

Effner was preceded in death by parents Olai and Mildred (Hanson) Opsal, sisters, Ardyth, Ardis and Muriel and brother Lyndon. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 71 years, Betty, his sons, Steven Lauris (Sherry) Opsal, Mark Alan (Sue) Opsal; grandchildren Jeff (Nikki) Opsal, Greg (Katie) Opsal, Dan (Lisa) Opsal, Stephanie Opsal Hearn (Sean), and Andy Opsal. There are also six great grandchildren and his brother, LeRoy Opsal and his wife, Dona.

Memorial donations can go to Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong.
