IA Attorney General requests receivership for funeral home

October 6, 2019
Estherville News

DES MOINES- Following an investigation showing the insolvency of the Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg, the Iowa Attorney General's Office recently requested a receivership to protect funds held in trust. If approved by Polk County District Court, the request for a receivership would appoint the Iowa Insurance Division as receiver given it regulates preneed funeral merchandise and services in Iowa.

Andrew Joyce, the operator of Joyce Funeral Home, is not licensed to engage in the sale of preneed contracts in Iowa.

An investigation showed two financial accounts for Joyce Funeral Home and Andrew Joyce Monuments maintained negative balances and that the Joyce-Alesch Funeral Home bank account was closed on July 17, 2019, due to a lack of funds.

Iowans that are known to have worked with Andrew Joyce regarding preneed planning or who have outstanding agreements or contracts with Joyce, Joyce Funeral Home or Joyce-Alesch Funeral Home have been contacted via postal mail. Any Iowans that have not been contacted that believe they have outstanding agreements or contracts with Andrew Joyce, Joyce Funeral Home or Joyce-Alesch Funeral Home are urged to contact the Iowa Insurance Division immediately.
