Along with the swimming pool referendum, Estherville voters in Ward 1 selected a new representative for city council on Tuesday.

In the contested race, Gary Heckard won the seat with 190 votes with Cindy Hood collecting 87 votes. Of the 915 voters in Ward 1, 277 turned out for the sepcial election for a voter turnout of 30 percent.

Hood was appointed to the Ward 1 seat earlier this year to fill the unexpired term of Brandon Carlin. Carlin had run for the at-large post, which left a vacancy on the council.

Following the canvass of ballots by the Emmet County Board of Supervisors, Heckard is expected to take his seat on the city council at the Aug. 19 meeting. His term runs through the end of 2019, so he will have to run again in the November 2019 city election.
