Pool bond passes with 69 percent

Estherville voters who showed up at polls said they wanted a new pool

Social media dissenters proved no match for the will of the people as voters in Estherville approved a bond for a municipal pool by a more than two-to-one margin. Only one-third of eligible voters went to the polls Tuesday to vote for both the pool and for Ward 1 city council. Gary Heckard won the Ward 1 seat on city council with 190 votes over incumbent Cindy Hood's 87. Cindy Hood was appointed to the Ward 1 position in January, 2018 after she and Shannon Leimkuhl both submitted letters of interest explaining why they were qualified to serve.

The $4.1 million project will be located near the Regional Wellness Center on Sixth Ave. South

The city and a committee formed in support of the pool project faced dissent and the spread of misinformation from posts on social media and a letter submitted at Monday night's council meeting by Mark Hood calling for an investigation into the pool project. Engineers have long stated there was no value in investing in the location of the currently unused municipal pool first built at that location in 1929 and refurbished by Moeller Construction in 1962.

The next step in the process is putting the project out for construction bids.
