ORANGE CITY - Estherville Lincoln Central's Jason Peta punched his ticket to the Class 2A State Wrestling Tournament with a second-place finish at the district tournament in Orange City on Saturday.

Peta, a senior, will have a chance to improve on his eight-place finish at state from a year ago at 113 pounds.

The state wrestling tournament for Classes 1A, 2A and 3A begins Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The first session for Class 2A is from 6-9 p.m.

Peta opened district action with a dominating 15-2 major decision over Sheldon-South O'Brien's Cason Johannes. In the final, he met Spirit Lake Park's Kyler Dunn, ranked ninth. It was the third meeting between the two wrestlers this season with Dunn winning the previous two, including by fall at the sectional meet.

Saturday's outcome was the same, as Dunn won by fall in 1:25.

That sent Peta into a wrestleback. The ELC senior didn't need long though and pinned Central Lyon's Cody Kramer in 44 seconds.

Peta's teammates didn't fare as well. Senior Kylan Fitzgerald finished third at 195 pounds while fellow senior Juan Diaz finished fourth at 182 pounds.

Fitzgerald opened the day against Sioux Center junior Chayce Hooyer and lost by fall in 1:50. Fitzgerald came back by pinning Spirit Lake Park's Preston Murray in 1:40 in the third-place match. However, Fitzgerald did not receive a wrestleback and ends his senior season with a 13-9 record.

Diaz opened the day with a loss by fall to sixth-ranked Luke Jenness of Sheldon-South O'Brien. In the consolation bracket, Cherokee's Treighton Schubert edged Diaz 3-1 in sudden victory. Diaz ends his final season for ELC with an 18-13 record.
