Estherville Lincoln Central makes the short trip to Spirit Lake this week and the Indians appear to be one of the top teams in Northwest Iowa this year.

Spirit Lake, now ranked second in Class 2A in Monday's Associated Press Poll, has started the season 4-0 with the closest contest a 27-13 victory over Spencer in Week 1.

ELC and Spirit Lake have one common opponent in non-district play in Forest City. The Midgets edged past Forest City 21-20 in Week 1 and Spirit Lake demolished Forest City a week later 42-0. Spirit Lake's other wins are a 35-14 win over Central Lyon and, last Friday, a 58-13 victory over Sioux Center.

Spirit Lake Coach Josh Bolluyt's teams have typically balanced the run and pass well and this year is no different. Connor Jensen, a 6-2, 185-pound junior is 43-of-62 passing for 691 yards with nine touchdowns to just one interception. His top two receivers each have 15 catches and three touchdowns with Spencer Newman recording 277 yards and Joe Stein with 240. Eight other players have caught at least one pass.

The Indians' ground attack is by committee with Jensen leading in carries with 44 for 180 yards and three scores. Junior Gavin Harms had 33 carries for 183 yards and three scores. Ten other players have carried the ball this season.

"They're athletic, they're fast and they have a lot of talent," said ELC coach Ryan Rezac of the Indians. "They do things well up front and are coached well. They get to their assignment and take care of it there."

ELC will look regroup once again this week after two straight losses. While the Midgets' offense showed improvement from the previous week in last Friday's 45-35 loss to Sheldon, ELC's defense was unable to slow down the Orabs.

"We need to do a better job of taking care of the football. We didn't win the turnover margin," Rezac said after his team lost the turnover battle 3-0 last Friday. "We need to get back to doing things well up front and we have to execute."
