Too many missed opportunities for the Estherville Lincoln Central Softball Team spelled the end to the Midgets' season in a 7-0 loss to Cherokee on Tuesday.

Playing in the first round of a Class 3A regional, ELC put runners in scoring position in the third through sixth innings, but couldn't push one across.

ELC ends its season with a 10-22 record with two seniors-Morgan White and Karmen Hazen-playing in their final game.

Cherokee struck first in the bottom of the second inning, pounded out four of their five hits against ELC starter Gabby Paul.

Maggie White relieved Paul in third inning, and she and the ELC defense retired six straight batters. But in the fifth inning, White struggled a bit, giving up three walks and one double. Along with an ELC error, that allowed Cherokee to score three insurance runs.

Offensively for ELC, Jadynn Moore's bunt single led off the third inning and Paul reached on an error. By the time there were two outs, the runners had moved to second and third. However Cherokee starter Lindsey Williams ended the inning with one of her 10 strikeouts on the night.

In the fourth inning, Lindsey Jensen drew a walk and Hazen singled to left. After two more Williams' strikeouts, she gave up her lone walk to Moore to load the bases.

ELC coach Megan Anderson inserted Kendyl Ruschy to pinch-hit, but she flew out to right field to end the threat.

In the fifth inning, Josie Condon hit a two-out single and went to second on a wild pitch, but another Williams strikeout ended the threat. In the sixth inning, Lena McCoy hit a one-out double followed by an infield single from Kylie Quastad.

Again, Williams shut down ELC with two straight strikeouts.

For ELC, Maggie White finished with four strikeouts and three walks. Paul had one strikeout and no walks.

At the plate, Condon, Hazen, McCoy, Quastad and Moore each had a hit.
