LE MARS - For three hours, Estherville Lincoln Central's Kendall Evans and Josie Condon and Spirit Lake/Okoboji's Casie Barba and Ashley Thorn battled for the Class 1A Region doubles tennis title in Le Mars on Wednesday.

When the dust settled, the ELC duo came away with a 7-6(7-3), 5-7, 6-3 victory. The victory sends the pair into the Class 2A State Tournament (May 30-31) in Waterloo. It will be the second trip for the juniors, who posted a 1-2 record at the 2017 doubles tournament.

"They weren't going to lose and pushed a little harder," said ELC coach Larry Kirchner of the third set. The coach said Evans and Condon were ahead in both of the previous sets.

"After the second set, there was a 10-minute break and the girls recomposed themselves and played harder in the third set. I'm extremely proud of them," he said.

Evans said by the third set, she and Condon were ready to be done.

"We wanted a better seed at the state tournament," she said.

The duo was seeded No. 2 at Wednesday's regional tennis tournament.

"We were confident going into the day," said Condon. "That last match was definitely long and good competition. We're proud of ourselves. Coach said this will help us prepare mentally and physically for the state tournament."

Evans and Condon started the day against Storm Lake's Briana Soto and Destiny Syhavong and won 6-0, 6-1. The ELC then faced Spirit Lake' Okoboji's Anna Ascheman and Marta Garcya. Again they won in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

That set up a semifinal match against Denison-Schleswig's third-seeded Jazlyn Beeck and Olivia Schumacher. Evans and Condon came through with a 6-3-61 victory.

Spirit Lake/Okoboji's Barba and Thorn were the region's top seed and had defeated Condon and Evans twice during the regular season.

Evans and Condon are looking forward to the state competition.

"It's fun to play with Josie and we have a great time," said Evans. "Thanks to everyone who has supported us and continues to support us."

"Thank to everyone who supports us and to our parents and Coach Larry," said Condon.

In other action, ELC's other doubles team of Brianna Fix and Emily Herum picked up one victory on the day. The opened with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Cherokee's Megan Kellen and Alisanne Struck.

But Fix and Evans then had to take on LeMar's Madison Dreckman and Maddy Mahan and lost 6-2, 6-1.

"I thought Brianna and Emily played well-there were a lot of deuce games," said ELC coach Larry Kirchner.

In singles play, ELC's Shiloh Kirchner took on fourth-seeded Courtney Aden of Cherokee and lost 6-0, 6-0. Also, Abbie Schmaus played Storm Lake's Beauna Thammathai and lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

With no seniors in his lineup this year, all four underclassmen will be back for coach Kirchner next season.
